It was mid February, of 2009.
At the time, I was working for a variety of brands mainly in the Footwear and Apparel industry. We had already produced a lot of content that year. As I reviewed everything we had done, I remember thinking what an accomplishment it was having only been two months into the year.
An accomplishment, yes…but there wasn’t anything extremely rewarding about it. As I continued to stare at the work, it dawned on me that I couldn’t point to any one project that was more creative than the other. It wasn’t a bad thing, it just didn’t feel unique, or even challenging.
I quickly removed myself from the moment and started adjusting some design work on my computer. I was working on a packaging design for a collection of (I hesitate even writing this) Blue Suede Shoes. My mind kept conjuring images of Elvis, peanut butter and banana sandwiches and lip quivering, hip-thrusting, dance moves. I thought, shouldn’t we package this with a CD and a Guitar? Or, perhaps we should sell them at the local bar during karaoke night.
Then, the words just slipped out. “Well, that’s kinda creative!”
I remember pausing for a long time. Taking my hands off my keyboard, I rolled my chair back and stared at my screen.
“KindaCreative”. I said it slowly this time, letting the words sink in.
Now, being a “creative”, I did the first thing that came naturally. I pulled out a piece of paper, a pencil, cleared off my desk and I started to draw. By noon, I had pages of logos, sketches, tag-lines and doodles; and one very clear thought in my mind.
“Tomorrow I will start my own design studio”.
I’m proud to announce that tomorrow, is now today!
